My smile, before and after. The only teeth I got filed down were my upper canines.

I’ve had braces, so my teeth are pretty straight, but the one thing I was always self-conscious about was the shape of my upper canines. They were a little too long and slightly hooked at the ends.

The Process

But it didn’t occur to me that you could file down healthy teeth until about five years ago. I don’t remember what finally prompted me, but I decided to ask if it was possible next time I was at the dentist. She was a little surprised at my question, but once she looked closer at my teeth and saw what I was talking about, she agreed.

Filing those two teeth took less than five minutes, didn’t hurt, and cost about $100. I’ve since read other people’s accounts of their dentist being willing to do it for free as part of their check-up appointment, but I wasn’t so lucky.

Most people haven’t and probably will never notice the change in my smile, but for a permanent fix about something I was self-conscious about, for me it was totally worth it.

Cost: $100

Worth it? Yes, definitely.
